Seven-time Malayan Racing Association champion trainer Ivan Allan died at the age of 68 on Wednesday, following a long battle with illness.
Allan began his career in 1964 to go on and become one of Singapore’s most successful trainers on both sides of the Causeway and overseas.
Up to the time he moved to Hong Kong in 1992, Allan had won the Singapore Gold Cup and Singapore Derby a record nine times each. In 1991, Allan was inducted into the Piaget Singapore Gold Cup Hall of Fame for having trained the most number of Gold Cup winners.
Some of the past champions Allan prepared include Jumbo Jet, Saas Fee, St Gallen, Feu Vert and Colonial Chief with whom Allan won the Hong Kong Invitation Cup in 1989 with Tony Cruz (now a leading trainer in Hong Kong) up.
The former British colony was to then become his hunting ground for 12 years from 1992 to 2004, as he went on to clinch the trainer’s premiership three times and a raft of feature races including the Hong Kong Vase with Indigenous in 1998, the Hong Kong Mile with Olympic Express in 2002, and most notably the 2000 Yasuda Kinen in Japan with Hong Kong sprint superstar Fairy King Prawn.
As an owner, his famous red and silver chevron colours (still worn by 2008 Raffles Cup winner Chevron) were also carried to many victories overseas, the most prestigious being arguably the 1984 English St Leger with the Luca Cumani-trained Commanche Run with Lester Piggott aboard.
