Italian experts: know that the virus may have spread in Italy before the outbreak in China
2020-03-22 09:42

[Text / Observer.com Zhao Noah] Although the new crown epidemic broke out in Italy in February, an expert from a well-known Italian medical institution recently said in an interview with the US media that some Italian doctors as early as November and December last year I have seen "very strange" and severe pneumonia, especially among older people.

The expert interviewed was Giuseppe Remuzzi, director of the Mario Negri Pharmacological Institute, a well-known medical institution in Italy. According to public information, he is an authority on nephrology and was invited to become a senior consultant of the Italian Ministry of Health in 2006. He is also an international consultant of the medical journal The Lancet.

On March 19, Remuzzi was asked by the National Public Radio (NPR): Why was Italy caught off guard when the outbreak was exposed on February 21?

Remuzzi said he was hearing information from a GP. "They (general practitioners) remember that in December and even November last year, they saw very strange pneumonia, which is very serious, especially among the elderly. This means that we are aware of the epidemic situation in China Before the outbreak, the virus spread at least in Lombardy. "

He also said that you cannot "fight" with something you don't know exists.

In addition, Remuzzi also mentioned the current severe domestic epidemic situation in Italy. He said that through the special training of doctors and nurses, an ordinary hospital can be converted into a specialized hospital for the new crown epidemic. "Dermatologists, ophthalmologists, and pathologists are all learning how to help a patient using a ventilator."

Another Roman surgeon, Carlo Vitali, spoke in an NPR interview about the current shortage of medical resources in Italy. "If you have a 99-year-old patient with a variety of underlying diseases in front of you and a child in need of intubation, and you only have a ventilator, you don't need to toss a coin to decide who to choose."

Due to limited medical resources, which patients should be given priority treatment have become a choice that doctors are forced to face. Guidelines issued by the Italian Academy of Anesthesia, Analgesia, Resuscitation, and Intensive Care recommend that, given the lack of resources, intensive care equipment should be made available to “the patients most likely to succeed and survive”.

According to the NPR, Italy is currently treating the new crown epidemic as a "war emergency" and the health department is rushing to arrange more beds. In Milan, for example, the old bazaar is being converted into a new crown emergency hospital with 500 new beds. Hospitals across the country have set up temporary tents outdoors for triage.

According to the latest data released by the Italian Ministry of Health on March 21, local time, there are currently 42681 patients with neo-coronary pneumonia in Italy, 4,825 deaths, and 6072 cures. The total number of newly diagnosed patients with neo-coronary pneumonia is 53,578, compared with March 20 At 6800 hours, 6557 new cases and 793 deaths were added.

Until 21st of last month, the number of confirmed cases in Italy has been stable at three. However, on the evening of February 22, the Italian government confirmed that as of that day, a total of 79 cases of new coronary pneumonia were confirmed in the country-a surge of 76 cases. Since then, the number of new cases in Italy has been growing rapidly.
