Indonesians, Malaysians 'safe'

INDONESIA and Malaysia yesterday condemned the deadly Israeli raid on a ship carrying activists and aid to the Gaza Strip, and confirmed that their nationals who were on board were safe. Indonesia had 12 nationals on board the Mavi Marmara, including volunteers from non-governmental groups and a journalist from the TV One station. Malaysia also had 12 nationals - 10 activists and two journalists - on the ship.

Their foreign ministers confirmed yesterday that they were safe and being detained at the Israeli port city of Haifa.Malaysian Foreign Minister Anifah Aman said efforts were under way to bring the Malaysians home. The two predominantly Muslim countries have urged the United Nations Security Council to investigate the incident, which Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak called 'cruel and inhumane'. Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa said that Indonesia would work with the international community to demand that Israel take responsibility for the attack early on Monday morning.
