QuickCheck: Is there a gigantic cave underneath Kuala Lumpur?

By CECILIA VICTOR

IN a shocking discovery, a leading geologist from University Malaya (UM) has revealed there lies an empty gigantic cave formed millions of years ago beneath Kuala Lumpur.

An in-depth study by one Dr Sarah Jamal and her team from UM claimed that the geological structure was formed millions of years ago, hence, making the city look like it was built on the ‘roof’ of a giant cave.

She explained further that the caves are made up of limestone rock that had over the years gradually eroded by underground water which created large cavities below the ground surface.

Her claims further said that the cave is made up of a unique ecosystem that has yet to be fully explored.

The university’s Geological Department chief Associate Professor Dr Meor Hakif Amir Hassan has confirmed that Dr Sarah Jamal is not part of UM and dismissed claims that the city was made up of a cave.

Meor Hakif also said the name, Dr Sarah Jamal was not registered under Malaysia’s Board of Geologists.

“The contents of this article were not written according to facts and are fake.

“UM Geology Department staff are taking caution when commenting on the KL sinkhole incident on Jalan Masjid India involving the loss of life, given that SAR works and investigations by the authorities are still ongoing, and the cause of the incident is still unknown,” he said.
