Presidential candidate Tan Jee Say's combative stance - since he announced his intention to run for the office - led a member of the Hainan Tan Clan Association to question him yesterday whether someone who has had no links with the ruling party would "create trouble" for the Government and "put the economy in trouble".
Mr Tan, who was having a dialogue with about 100 members of the association, replied that he "did not think so" and pointed out that the President's veto powers were limited - and a gridlock would be unlikely.
Speaking to Today later, Mr Tan - who has received a police permit to hold a night-time rally next Tuesday at Toa Payoh Stadium - reiterated that the daily management of the economy is in the hands of the Government, not the President.
He said: "If the Government can convince the President that what they are doing is right, I don't see why the President should be so difficult."
Mr Tan also reiterated that people "should not be afraid of speaking up". "Disagreeing doesn't mean that one is confrontational," he said.
Speaking to reporters after the dialogue, Mr Tan again clarified his suggestion to dismantle Temasek Holdings: He is not advocating that subsidiaries of Temasek Holdings be closed down, instead he meant that the shares of Government-linked companies should be transferred into the hands of individuals.
Furthermore, many of the key positions in these companies are appointed by the Government, when there was "no shortage of talent" in the private sector to fulfil these roles, he added.
Adding that there are Singaporeans who are "unhappy because of economic reasons". Mr Tan also said he felt compelled to "engage in a new economic consensus that would put happiness at the heart" of Government policies.
He added: "If you want a unifying role ... I think you don't need an Elected President to do that, you can do that through an appointed President." Apart from the dialogue, Mr Tan also held walkabouts yesterday at Arab Street and Toa Payoh.
