Bukit Batok Independent Candidate running under auspices of
PAP?

According to a netizen, Semir Neji, who is a new citizen from India, had
arrived just 30 mins before the close of nomination and without any
assenters.

He however managed to register himself as a candidate when supporters of the
PAP came forward to put their name as his assenters.


Ostensibly their intention is to split the votes of SDP which is contesting
there.

Semir Neji is listed as the MD of a company called Anaplan APAC.

A check on his LinkedIn reveals that his company in Singapore is staffed by
his compatriots from India.

Semir Neji is a product of the PAP’s ultra-liberal immigration policy towards
India, the cornerstone of which is the CECA that will open the doors of 127
professional sectors in Singapore to Indian nationals.

Under the PAP, Semir Neji is among thousands of his countrymen who have gamed
the system and brought in their fellow compatriots to Singapore to work or live
here.

In an interview with the Indian media recently, PAP Law Minister Shanmugam
announced that the PAP wants to enhance the CECA with India.

Does the candidacy of Semir Neji represent an “enhancement” in the political
sphere with these new citizens from India taking a more active role in S’pore
politics under the aegis of the PAP?

According to the netizen, he is considering lodging a police report given the
unusual circumstances surrounding Semir Neji’s candidacy.

Independent candidate and new citizen Samir Neji

Samir Salim Neji, 45, who is currently contesting in a 3-cornered fight as an
independent candidate in Bukit Batok SMC, is a new citizen from Kerala,
India.

Mr Samir has been a Singapore citizen since 2000 and is the managing director
of software firm Anaplan Asia.

The other 2 parties contesting Bukit Batok are PAP and SDP, who are
represented by David Ong and Sadasivam Veriyah respectively.

Mr Ong said, “It’s a fair and just election. We welcome any party that wants
to contest here, so there’ll be more options for our residents and voters.”

Mr Samir reportedly almost did not qualify to run in the general election
(GE) because he did not have enough assenters to complete his nomination form as
some had gone to work and had not made it to the nomination centre on time.
PAP members at the nomination centre then offered to reach out to Bukit Batok
residents to get them to help him make up the numbers so as to complete the
form.

Otherwise, Mr Samir would have been disqualified and Bukit Batok would have
been a straight fight between PAP and SDP.

Mr Samir told the media that he aims to campaign for family happiness and
less stress.

“I want to reduce the stress so there’s more time with the family. How can I
do that? I have a plan for doing that, so I’ll try to explain it to the
electorate,” he said.

He plans to engage voters through social media. “It’s about how fast I can
reach you through mobile phones and computers. I’m a techie, so I’ll be able to
do that.”

Mr Samir is very confident of his chances, saying, “My confidence level is
probably 80, 85 per cent.”

Netizens worry

A TRE reader wrote in to express his worries. He is worried that new citizens
may form their own political parties in future to represent their own selfish
interests rather than the interests of Singaporeans at large.

“Is he (Samir) the role model for future new citizens and other foreign
talents to form their own political parties for the different groups in future?”
he asked.

“For example, will we see a group of new citizens from the Philippines in
future form their own party so as to champion Filipino rights in Singapore, like
celebrating their own National Day in Orchard Road?”

The reader argued that such a scenario might happen if the PAP government
suddenly allows a large group of them to become new citizens without proper
integration.
