THE editor of the Irish Daily Star newspaper has resigned after creating a furore by publishing topless photos of Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge.
The paper made the announcement that Michael O'Kane would immediately give up his post. He had been suspended after republishing topless photos of Kate in September.
Media tycoon Richard Desmond, who co-owns the newspaper, was outraged by the publication of the photos and had threatened to shut the Dublin operation down.
In a statement released overnight the Irish Daily Star said issues had arisen with shareholders after the photos were published.
"Having considered those issues in tandem with Mr O'Kane, it is Mr O'Kane's decision to resign as editor of the Irish Daily Star, effective immediately," the statement said.
The paper however said that Mr O'Kane had followed all editorial policies and guidelines and had been an excellent editor.
