Iran's Rouhani warns Trump of 'historic regret' over nuclear deal

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has warned that the US will face "historic regret" if Donald Trump scraps the nuclear agreement with Tehran.

Mr Rouhani's comments come as the US president decides whether to pull out of the deal by a 12 May deadline.

Mr Trump has strongly criticised the agreement, calling it "insane".

The 2015 deal - between Iran, the US, China, Russia, Germany, France and the UK - lifted sanctions on Iran in return for curbs on its nuclear programme.

France, the UK and Germany have been trying persuade the US president that the current deal is the best way to stop Iran developing nuclear weapons.

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson is travelling to Washington on Sunday to discuss the matter with White House officials.

The UN also warned Mr Trump not to walk away from the deal.

However, he has threatened that the US will "withdraw" from the deal on 12 May - the end of a 120-day review period - unless Congress and European powers fixed its "disastrous flaws".

In remarks carried live on Iranian state television on Sunday, President Rouhani said: "If America leaves the nuclear deal, this will entail historic regret for it."

He warned Iran had "a plan to counter any decision Trump may take and we will confront it".

Iran insists its nuclear programme is entirely peaceful and says it considers the deal non-renegotiable.

Last week, Israel revealed "secret nuclear files" which it said showed Iran had run a secret nuclear weapons programme, which was reportedly mothballed 15 years ago.

Iran branded Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a liar and said the documents he produced were a rehash of old allegations already dealt with by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the UN's nuclear watchdog.

But US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the documents were authentic and showed the 2015 Iran nuclear deal was "built on lies".

Mr Trump is already unhappy that the current deal only limits Iran's nuclear activities for a fixed period and does not stop the development of ballistic missiles.

He also said it had handed Iran a $100bn (£72bn) windfall that it used "as a slush fund for weapons, terror, and oppression" across the Middle East.

During two days of talks in Washington, Mr Johnson will meet US Vice-President Mike Pence, National Security Adviser John Bolton and foreign policy leaders in Congress.

Earlier this month, he said it was important to keep the deal "while building on it in order to take account of the legitimate concerns of the US".

Iran’s Surprise Discovery of Massive Uranium Deposits

“People may cover their hatred with pleasant words, but they’re deceiving you. They pretend to be kind, but don’t believe them. Their hearts are full of many evils. While their hatred may be concealed by trickery, their wrongdoing will be exposed in public.” (Proverbs 26:24-26)

The head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization announced on Saturday the discovery of high reserve of uranium soon to be extracted from a new mine.

Iran’s announcement has left critics of the nuclear deal questioning the strength of the agreement, which was structured on the basis of assessments by Western experts that Iran had a small and dwindling supply of fuel for their nuclear program, forcing them to import uranium ore, which is heavily regulated and monitored.

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the nuclear accord between Iran and P5+1 world powers, is based on regulating the Islamic Republic’s use of uranium. Iran has been accused in the past of trying to acquire uranium ore, called yellowcake, illicitly from other countries such as Kazakhstan and Zimbabwe.

Ali Akbar Salehi, the head of Iran’s nuclear program, was quoted by the Iranian news agency IRNA as saying, “I cannot announce (the level of) Iran’s uranium mine reserves. The important thing is that before aerial prospecting for uranium ores we were not too optimistic, but the new discoveries have made us confident about our reserves.”

Salehi said extraction of the ore was all ready to begin at the new mine in the province of Yazd. According to a report by the Institute for Science and International Security, Salehi was implicated in an Iranian attempt to acquire illicit nuclear technologies from a European supplier during the 1980’s and 1990’s.

In a 2013 report published by US think-tanks Carnegie Endowment and the Federation of American Scientists, experts stated that the scarcity and low quality of Iran’s uranium resources would require the country “to rely on external sources of natural and processed uranium…Despite the Iranian leadership’s assertions to the contrary, Iran’s estimated uranium endowments are nowhere near sufficient to supply its planned nuclear program.”

Uranium is used for peaceful nuclear energy programs, but it is also an essential ingredient for producing nuclear weapons. Iran has achieved a complete nuclear program which includes every step for taking raw uranium and producing nuclear rods. Though the JCPOA agreement has re-purposed some installations, it has left Iran’s nuclear program effectively intact.

Iran has discovered a large quantity of uranium and will soon begin mining it, according to a top Iranian official in charge of the country’s atomic program.

Ali Akbar Salehi, head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, said on Saturday that the new discovery makes Tehran “confident” regarding its reserves of the natural element.

Uranium is a key ingredient in the making of nuclear weapons. Iran’s use of such materials is intended to be regulated under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the nuclear agreement between Iran and world powers, signed in Vienna in July.

Iran says finds unexpectedly high uranium reserve

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran has discovered an unexpectedly high reserve of uranium and will soon begin extracting the radioactive element at a new mine, the head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization said on Saturday.

The comments cast doubt on previous assessments from some Western analysts who said the country had a low supply and sooner or later would need to import uranium, the raw material needed for its nuclear program.

Any indication Iran could become more self-sufficient will be closely watched by world powers, which reached a landmark deal with Tehran in July over its program. They had feared the nuclear activities were aimed at acquiring the capability to produce atomic weapons - something denied by Tehran.

“I cannot announce (the level of) Iran’s uranium mine reserves. The important thing is that before aerial prospecting for uranium ores we were not too optimistic, but the new discoveries have made us confident about our reserves,” Iranian nuclear chief Ali Akbar Salehi was quoted as saying by state news agency IRNA.

Salehi said uranium exploration had covered almost two-thirds of Iran and would be complete in the next four years.

Uranium can be used for civilian power production and scientific purposes, but is also a key ingredient in nuclear weapons.

The July deal between Iran and world powers will lift international sanctions on Iran in exchange for at least a decade of curbs on the country’s nuclear activity.

The U.S. State Department said any new reserves of uranium discovered in Iran will be under the same monitoring as existing mines under the nuclear agreement.

“Any violation of that commitment would be met with the appropriate response,” State Department spokesman John Kirby said in a statement.

After decades of effort, Iran - which has consistently said its program is for peaceful purposes - has achieved a full nuclear fuel cycle, ranging from the extraction of uranium ore to enrichment and production of fuel rods for nuclear reactors.

Sanctions on companies taking part in Iran’s uranium mining industry will be lifted when the agreement is implemented.

Salehi said uranium extraction was set to begin at a new mine in the central province of Yazd, according to IRNA.

Some Western analysts have previously said that Iran was close to exhausting its supply of yellowcake - or raw uranium - and that mining it domestically was not cost-efficient.

A report published in 2013 by U.S. think-tanks Carnegie Endowment and the Federation of American Scientists said the scarcity and low quality of Iran’s uranium resources compelled it “to rely on external sources of natural and processed uranium”.

It added: “Despite the Iranian leadership’s assertions to the contrary, Iran’s estimated uranium endowments are nowhere near sufficient to supply its planned nuclear program.”

Iran has repeatedly denied overseas media reports that it has tried to import uranium from countries like Kazakhstan and Zimbabwe.

“I cannot announce (the level of) Iran’s uranium mine reserves. The important thing is that before aerial prospecting for uranium ores we were not too optimistic, but the new discoveries have made us confident about our reserves,” Salehi was quoted as saying by IRNA, a state news agency.

Salehi was at the table next to Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif when the JCPOA plan was drafted.

World powers previously believed uranium ore was an Achilles’ Heel of Iran’s nuclear aspirations, since the country was considered as having very low reserves of the material and would need to import.

Reuters on Saturday quoted a report by US think-tanks Carnegie Endowment and the Federation of American Scientists that said Iran was compelled “to rely on external sources of natural and processed uranium” because of the scarcity and low quality of its own uranium resources.

“Despite the Iranian leadership’s assertions to the contrary, Iran’s estimated uranium endowments are nowhere near sufficient to supply its planned nuclear program,” according to the report.

Salehi told IRNA on Saturday that by now, two-thirds of the country have been already covered in the search for uranium ore. He said that within four years, the search will have covered all of Iran.

The new mine, Salehi said, is in the province of Yazd in central Iran.

Sanctions on companies involved in the mining of uranium in Iran will be lifted as part of the historic and controversial nuclear deal.

On Thursday, Iranian envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency Reza Najafi said that Tehran has not yet decided how to reduce its enriched uranium stockpile — which it must do under JCPOA.

Najafi said one option would be to export it to Russia or other countries. The other, he said, would be to convert it to non-enriched form.

Najafi was speaking to reporters Thursday outside a meeting of the agency’s 35-nation board.
