Prologue:
On 11 February 2008, Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan suggested in Parliament that Singaporeans who are unable to afford putting their aged parents in private nursing homes in Singapore may consider sending them to Johor Bahru instead where the price is lower.
What do our elderly folks think of Mr Khaw’s proposal ? The Enquirer TV team interviewed over 100 elderly Singaporeans in 3 different estates - Whampoa, Upper Hokkien Street and Bishan North to find out the real sentiment on the ground.
Excerpts of interview:
“Malaysia ??? I don’t think many people will go. First the place is foreign to us and we have no friends there. Of course I prefer to live in Singapore !”
“Isn’t he (Khaw) irresponsible by sending our elderly to JB? If we go to Malaysia, wouldn’t we be looked down upon by the Malaysians ? It is not correct for him to speak like this.”
“Of course I will choose to live in Singapore as a I am a Singaporean !”
