Recently, I was waiting on the platform for the mrt to arrive, when I saw a man walking very near the edge of the platform, well beyond the yellow line. He was waving his umbrella and shouting. Everyone stared at him as he walked to the end of the platform. Subsequently, the train arrived and he got on the same train as me, he was still shouting incoherently. I got off before him, so I don't know what happened to him in the end.
I've noticed that there are more and more of such cases walking around lately. You can see them in shopping malls, mrt stations, on the streets, in bus interchanges, food courts, coffee shops. Some of them are waving objects, most are talking to themselves or shouting at an invisible person. I wonder if the people around are alarmed, passersby, mrt and bus workers, retail and food stall workers etc. Could they possibly pose a danger to others? The fact that they are walking around does no good to themselves, their families, people who know them, people around them.
Why doesn't the government take action and help these people and in so doing, help all the people around them as well? It appears to me that the government's reluctance and unwillingness to help out those in need is not merely something to be criticized anymore, it has become insidious as there are now potential repercussions to everyone around the person who needs help.
