Bandung – Apollinaris Darmawan, a grandfather in Bandung who insulted religion, was sentenced by a panel of judges. He was found guilty and sentenced to five years in prison.
The judges read the verdict at the Bandung District Court (PN) on Tuesday (December 22) last week. He was found guilty and sentenced to 5 years in prison.
“Five years imprisonment,” said Public Relations of Bandung District Court Wasdi Permana when he pronounced sentence on Wednesday (December 30, 2020).
In addition to corporal punishment, he is also subject to a penalty of Rp. 800 million [$57,000] in the form of a fine of Rp. 800 million on the condition that if not paid, he will serve three additional months in prison.
According to Wasdi, Apollinaris was found guilty in accordance with Article 28 of the Information and Electronic Transactions (ITE) Law.
“The qualification is deliberately and without the right to disseminate information aimed at creating hatred or enmity for certain individuals / or groups of people based on ethnicity, religion, race and intergroup (SARA),” he said.
Previously, a grandfather in Bandung named Apollinaris Darmawan allegedly committed an insult against religion. The man was also arrested by the police.
The arrest of Apollonaris was recorded on video. The video of the arrest also circulated on social media (medsos). As seen by detik.com on Sunday (August 9, 2020) at 14:20 WIB, the video shows the white-haired Apollinaris being put into a police car by officers.
When he was arrested, many residents were in the location of the incident which was later discovered to be around Jalan Jatayu, Cicendo District, Bandung City. They heard that residents seemed angry with the old man.
“What do you mean, sir, insulting Islam?,” said a man in the video.
“You are also religious, right? We never insult your religion,” said another man in the video.
Police who secure asked residents to calm down. The police then put the man, who appeared not to be wearing a shirt into the car.
