One recent incident in Indonesia showed just how much a single business from one customer can mean to a motorcyclist taxi rider.
Weeping over lost money
A video circulating on social media featured a motorcycle taxi driver in Jakarta.
Motorcycle taxis ferry passengers for a fee and they function through app-based ride-sharing services such as Grab or Gojek, and are colloquially known as ojek or ojol.
In the video, the rider, clad in a green uniform and reportedly named Darto, can be seen bawling his eyes out.
According to Coconuts Jakarta, the man’s customer had just cancelled on him, and this was reportedly the first customer he had received all morning.
To add salt to wounds, he apparently had to shell out Rp200,000 (S$19.37) to buy several items for the customer, only for the customer to cancel the ride on him.
This is likely not a small amount for ojek riders, who typically earn Rp3,000 per kilometre.
The rider also revealed that he was working to support his mother and younger sibling.
The man behind the camera tried to comfort the man by saying that the goods he bought were now his, but the rider appeared inconsolable and continued weeping.
