DENPASAR, BALI: A new international airport could help transform Bali into “the new Singapore” or “the new Hong Kong”, the country’s newly-inaugurated president has pledged.
“I am committed to build a North Bali International Airport … We will make Bali into the new Singapore, the new Hong Kong … an economic centre” he said during a luncheon event in Denpasar, Bali on Sunday (Nov 3) attended by the governor and mayoral candidates that his Gerindra Party is endorsing their candidacies for in the upcoming regional elections.
The planned international airport will be in the Buleleng regency - also the largest and most populated regency on the island, located in the northern area, more than two hours away by car from Denpasar city.

Indonesia has banned the sale of Google Pixel smartphones, just days after stopping the iPhone 16from being sold legally in the country.
Government rules require all smartphones sold inside Indonesia to have 40% of their parts manufactured domestically. Or their manufacturers need to make significant investments in the local economy. Febri Hendri Antoni Arief, Indonesia's industry ministry spokesperson, says the rules are to ensure "fairness for all investors in Indonesia," Reuters reports.

Indonesia’s stake in 5-generation fighter jet project reduced by South Korea

ISTANBUL
South Korea announced on Friday a reduction in Indonesia’s financial contribution to the KF-21 fifth-generation fighter jet development project, cutting it to $440 million.
Under the new agreement, Indonesia's commitment has been lowered from 1.6 trillion won ($1.18 billion) to 600 billion won ($440 million), according to South Korea's defense authorities as reported by Yonhap News.
Originally, Indonesia had agreed to cover 20% of the 8.1 trillion won ($6.1 billion) program, which began in 2015. Jakarta has so far contributed approximately 380 billion won ($279 million).

Indonesia’s Bold Bid to Become a Semiconductor Hub

The country enjoys some natural advantages, but faces significant challenges in outpacing its neighbors.

Semiconductors, commonly known as “chips,” are the tiny technological marvels that enable electronic devices to process and store data. Once considered highly specialized technological products, chips have gradually evolved into one of the most important industrial commodities of the 21st century. This shift is due to the fact that chips have become crucial components in key technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing, and the Internet of Things, all of which have significant security and economic implications. Much like oil, nations are now fiercely competing for control and production of chips, giving rise to a new geopolitical struggle. This battle for dominance threatens the global supply chain as countries vie for control over this critical technology.

Earlier this May, the Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartantostated that Indonesia is taking steps to build its own semiconductor ecosystem. This initiative is one of the key aspects of Indonesia’s Golden Indonesia 2045 vision. However, several challenges stand in the way of the realization of this ambitious goal.

The global chip supply chain is dominated by several key nations, each specializing in different segments of semiconductor production. Taiwan and South Korea lead in semiconductor foundries, producing the majority of the world’s chips. In chip design, the United States excels, with companies like Intel, Qualcomm, and NVIDIA at the forefront. The Netherlands, through ASML, controls over 80 percent of the market for lithography machines, and 100 percent market share for EUV lithography machines, which are essential for manufacturing the most advanced microchips. Japan, once a world leader in semiconductor manufacturing, has since been relegated to producing advanced materials such as silicon wafers. China is investing heavily in building its own semiconductor ecosystem in response to U.S. trade restrictions.
