My husband got a job offer from Finland. We are Indians. How is the country Finland to live? Will it be difficult for us to adjust?

Hi,

Its good to know that you are coming to Finland. I can share you my experience here !

Its a lovely country to live. A beautiful, calm and peaceful place. Life is easy and so comfortable here. I came here in January 2017 for my PhD. I stay in Oulu, a city far north up in Finland. Regarding difficulty to adjust, its not difficult at all. We all got adjusted here, so will you. So, be positive and come with an open mind to explore this country. Some suggestions from my side,

  1. Keep yourself busy : It was not difficult for me since I had work to do which kept me busy. If you keep yourself busy doing something, it should not be a problem. Here, its not like India, you would not see many people when you go out. If you walk for 1 km, you may find 2, 3 people walking.
  2. Maintain social life: Meet people, party, invite peole for dinners. If you are a social person (we are mostly) there is a good Indian community here. Also you can mingle with people from different countries here. Finnish people are really nice. They are honest, sincere and focussed. They would not come and start a conversation with you. And please do not go on the blank facial expressions, once you talk to them, you would know they are really amazing and nice people.
  3. Extreme climate: Yes the climate is extreme here. Snow most of the time, and cold. Followed by melting of snow and icy roads to walk. I would suggest wearing proper clothing for this, boots and jackets. They say here, its no bad weather, its just bad dressing ! For slippery roads, you can use shoes with proper grips or external grips especially made to walk on ice.
  4. Dealing with day light: It would be cumbersome intially to sleep when it broad day outside during midsummer. You can try dark curtains, eye masks etc. In India, we are used to getting up with sun and sleeping at dark. Finalnd taught me its not so. We continue following our schedule and work, irrespective of sun and light.
I wish you good luck ! Do not worry, it will be a good experience for you.
