MALAYALAM as a mother tongue language in Singapore schools.
That is the goal of the newly formed Malayalam Language Education Society Singapore. It was launched on Saturday at the Naval Base Secondary School in Yishun by Law Minister K. Shanmugam.
Addressing the media after the event, Mr Shanmugam applauded the formation of the society and said it should be welcomed and supported.
He said: 'Malayalam has a rich tradition, it is culturally a very rich language as well, and people who are Malayalees should be encouraged to access and strengthen their roots and that does not detract in any way from being Singaporean.'
Malayalam is the main language of the southern Indian state of Kerala. There are about 25,000 Malayalees in Singapore.
The idea of a society to promote Malayalam was mooted in late 2008 and since then a group of volunteers has worked with the Board of Teaching & Testing of South Asian Languages. They have prepared texts for primary students and currently about 50 students attend weekly Malayalam classes offered in five centres. These are in Sembawang, Bukit Batok, Toa Payoh, Jurong and Sembawang.
>OMG!!! IF we are going to set up a MT syllabus for only 25K here, what other languages are we going to offer as MT? India has hundreds if not thousands of languages/dialects. Malayalam is probably just another dialect in India. Why are they getting this special treatment when we can't get Chinese dialects like hokkien teochew cantonese or others recognised by the gahmen as our real MTs and taught in schools? The gahmen has been supressing people from using chinese dialects for decades. This is outright another form of discrimination against the majority of the true blue singaporeans.
