Sandeep Sharma, a managing director at HSBC’s private banking arm claimed that he had been defamed by Yahoo’s user impersonating him and making offensive remarks about Singaporeans.
Mr Sharma is asking the Singapore’s High Court to order Yahoo Singapore to reveal the identity of the person using the moniker “Sandeep” and claiming to be him.
“Sandeep” was said to have made a few postings on Yahoo’s forum calling Singaporeans “highly incompetent” and saying that foreigners are Singapore’s future, according to court papers filed on 8 Aug.
This incident reflects the tensions that have been mounting between foreigners and Singaporeans. Singaporeans are increasingly getting angry with the Govt for opening the floodgates to allow high influx of foreigners to work in Singapore, competing with Singaporeans for jobs. Currently, foreigners make up close to 40% of the 5.2 million population in Singapore.
Mr Sharma has also made a police report last month over the matter. He said that the postings made were malicious and intended to portray him as an “arrogant, bigoted and narrow-minded person who is prejudiced against Singaporeans in general.”
Mr Sharma and his family moved to Singapore from India in 2007. He became a PR the next year. He was with Barclays’ wealth management unit as the head of South Asian business before joining HSBC as head of Global South Asian Diaspora in Mar 2010.
According to court papers, at least 1 person has written to HSBC to say that he will not want to be a client of HSBC because of the postings. HSBC has asked Yahoo for information of the person who made those postings but was rebuffed by Yahoo. Yahoo said it couldn’t reveal the information unless there was a court or police order in its reply to HSBC.
