Solve the 'new' traffic problem quickly

TEN years ago, when I first set foot on Singapore, I was impressed with the infrastructure, safety and civility. Traffic sense among Singaporeans impressed me so much that I took what I observed back with me to India where seat belts were not even a standard fixture in our cars then. But after moving here about four years back, over the years, I have noted a discomforting rise in incidents of road rage here.
While these may not be as bad as that in many other countries, we should not be complacent or things may get out of hand.
Lately, some cyclists have managed to successfully instil fear in the minds of many pedestrians with their reckless riding on the pavements. And it is because of some cyclists, who ride at high speeds on the pavements, zigzagging their way through crowds, that most of us feel that walking on the footpaths is akin to walking on busy roads.
The point of this letter is not to blame anyone, least of all the cyclists. I would love to ride a bicycle if there were separate cycling lanes and if drivers were considerate enough to let cyclists share the road. In the same vein, as a car driver, I can understand the frustration when a slow-moving cyclist hogs the whole lane.
Right now, this is a Catch-22 situation. Something needs to be done quickly.

I got to agree with Ah Neh on this. Cyclists are fucking chao cb degenerate scumbags on wheels. Foothpath for what?! Walking or cycling? Knn everytime see those cyclists especially foreign trash zig zag at fast speed. Their highway si bor?

The biggest irony of all is that after cycling on the pavement in Tampines was legalised, they had auxillary policemen standing all over Tampines telling cyclists not to speed on the pavements, not to be reckless, to give way to pedestrians, etc.

But everywhere else in Singapore, cyclists continued to cycle recklessly on pavements and ring their bells at and curse pedestrians as if they had the right of way, when it is still illegal to cycle on the pavements.
