Incredible picture of Soufriere Hills volcano erupting on island of Montserrat in the Caribbean
Picture captured by Holiday-maker Mary Jo Penkala as she flew over the active volcano.
METRO REPORTER - 24th March, 2010
‘Ladies and gentlemen, if you look to the left of the plane, you will see a volcano erupting...’
Holiday-maker Mary Jo Penkala took this picture of a volcanic eruption as she flew over the island of Montserrat in the Caribbean. ‘We were so lucky to see the volcano in all its glory,’ said the hairdresser, 49. She was on a Boeing 737 from Toronto to St Lucia when the pilot alerted passengers to the eruption. Much of the island has been evacuated since the Soufriere Hills volcano began erupting in 1995.
“It was certainly an interesting start to our vacation.”

The strange bubble-like effect is from the atmosphere being pushed upwards by the shockwave of the eruption.
This is how the armageddon begins
NASA said it was extremely lucky to be in the right position at the right time, with no wind in the area.
Sarychev is in the Kuril Islands in the east of Russia.
