Lawyer struck off rolls
By Khushwant Singh
DAVID Khong Siak Meng, a lawyer of 16 years' standing, was struck off the rolls of lawyers on Monday.
The Court of Three Judges, which decides on disciplinary matters involving the legal profession, heard that he had misappropriated $68,000 belonging to a client in 2007, and is believed to have skipped town.
He has not been heard since.
Acting for the Law Society, Mr R.S. Wijaya, asked Chief Justice Chan Sek Keong, and Judges of Appeal Andrew Phang Boon Leong and V.K. Rajah (correct) to disbar Khong.
He agreed with the Court of Three Judges that Khong, now 42, has not been prosecuted because he has not been found.
The Court of Three Judges ordered Khong to be struck off with costs.
Khong's misappropriation was the first case of a lawyer absconding with a client's money to emerge since the rules surrounding such crimes were tightened just in July 2007.
