SINGAPORE : Three illegal Chinese immigrants and two Singaporeans were arrested by the Singapore Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) near the Tuas Checkpoint on August 3.
The Singaporeans had intended to abet the Chinese trio's illegal departure.
Aged 16 and 19 years old, the two young men claimed that they were approached by a man known as "Ah Leng" who had promised them S$100 each to send the Chinese nationals to a pre-designated spot where a boat would convey them out of Singapore into Malaysia.
One of the Chinese nationals, a 40-year-old woman, had previously been convicted of overstaying and possession of uncensored films in Singapore.
The other 39-year-old woman and 31-year-old man had overstayed for periods of one to four years.
The three claimed they were charged S$2,000 to S$3,000 for the arrangements to depart Singapore illegally.
ICA is investigating all five persons for immigration-related offences.
The penalties for overstaying or illegal entry are a jail term of up to six months, on top of a minimum of three strokes of the cane.
In cases where caning cannot be administered, the offender will be fined up to S$6,000.
