BUKIT MERTAJAM: Police have busted three illegal gambling centres operating under the guise of a coffee shop and Internet cafes here. The centres are said to have offered on-line gambling, including jackpot and one-arm bandit games.
Following a tip-off, a secret society, gambling and vice division team from Bukit Aman led by Supt Maszely Minhad, raided the coffee shop in Taman Sri Kijang, Alma at 4.15pm yesterday. The team later raided two Internet cafes in Taman Perusahaan Ringan Usaha Jaya and Kawasan Perusahaan Ringan Asas Jaya in Permatang Tinggi.
"We detained five workers, aged between 16 and 28 years, including two women, at the centres. "We also detained 14 gamblers, aged between 29 and 50 years," he said, adding that four other men were also arrested for playing mahjong in the coffee shop.
Supt Maszely said during the two-hour operation, dubbed Ops Dadu, police found RM2,000 (S$856) believed to be used for betting purposes and seized 49 units of computers as evidence. He said a worker had posed as a burger seller outside one of the venues to admit only regular customers.
