How much do young Singaporeans really care about elections? If voting were not compulsory, would they even bother to vote?

With the General Election (GE) looming, The New Paper decided to find out by commissioning a survey of 1,003 Singaporeans aged 21 to 35.

This age group is estimated to make up more than 600,00 - or about one in four - of the 2.35 million eligible voters.

They are viewed by some as potential swing voters.

The main finding: A significant proportion of young Singaporeans simply don’t care about exercising their vote.

Thirty-nine per cent of those polled said they would not bother to vote if voting were not compulsory.

Voting here is compulsory.

voters turnout rate are usually around 63%-68% +- 3% in most countries that don't have compulsory voting.
majority of peasants are simply not interested in politics and won't bother to vote, sinkies or americans likewise.

USA presidential election 2008, voters turnout rate 63% was their highest in 40 years and congress midterm elections 2010 had a voters turnout rate of just 42%.

The fact that SDP ranks higher then NSP, RP and SPP says a lot about how little the voters know

Compulsory voting is one of the mechanism keeping PAP in power

Voter how knows nothing about politics will probably cast the "safe" vote and just vote for PAP

At the same time it's next to impossible for the opposition to argue against compulsory voting. How to argue, they scare of knowing the "real" pple's mandate if everyone has to vote issit.
