SINGAPORE: Two Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) full-time National Servicemen were injured on Friday while participating in a live hand grenade training at Pulau Tekong.

The incident took place at 10.45am, and involved Safety Officer Second Lieutenant (2LT) Kamalasivam S/O Shanmuganathan and Recruit (REC) Abdul Hamid Bin Abdul Smad.

The practice throw earlier the same morning had proceeded without incident.

But during the actual throw, recruit Abdul Hamid accidentally released the hand grenade lever while pulling out the safety pin.

Second Lieutenant Kamalasivam immediately instructed recruit Abdul Hamid to throw the grenade towards the designated impact area.

He then pulled Recruit Abdul Hamid down to take cover in the grenade throwing bay and shielded him.

The grenade detonated in mid-air away from the bay.

Recruit Abdul Hamid sustained an injury to a finger on his right hand while Second Lieutenant Kamalasivam was injured on his left shoulder.

Both servicemen were treated on site and subsequently sent to Changi General Hospital (CGH) at 11.45am.

Both are stable and conscious, and currently under observation in the general ward in CGH.

Live hand grenade training has been suspended until investigations are completed.

I hit the dummy smack on the head during my BMT grenade throw session.

I should have been awarded a prize, like in those 'hit the target' games at fun fairs.

All I got was a pat on the shoulder and 'Well done' from the 2LT. :oIo:

You may think it is easy, but it is not so easy ok. The officer may know better but at the moment of throw, the recruit may panic or forget to do the correct procedure, resulting in an incident.

Years back at Pulau Tekong too, during the live grenade exercise, a recruit panicked and fumbled, and did not follow through the throw. It was short of the target. The OC happened to be at that particular station then and just managed to pull the recruit down but the grenade exploded, resulting in the OC substaining a sharpnel wound in the neck. He was in hospital for more than two weeks and when he returned to Company lines just before POP, we saw for ourselves how much weight he lost and the wound at his neck. It was lucky that this incident was not more serious, if not two lives could have been lost, just in a moment of fumbling.

This is not a laughing matter as depicted in cartoons like Popey the sailor man.:(

You're not supposed to hit the dummy on the head, you dummy.
It may bounce off his head and ricochet back to you or one of your compatriots.

most folks can only throw the hand grenades once in their life, this bozo must be really a klutz to bust his chance.
remembered my unit indented some grenades, LAW and the M203 rounds, exhausted the M203 rounds and LAW tubes, the others weren't interested in the hand grenades. me and the ammo IC got to practise our "humtum bola" skills using the remnants of the hand grenades. we lobed about a hundred "soon to expire" grenades to clear the stock. unscrewing those canisters were a pain in the arse.

Maybe the recruit watch too much Rambo and thought that if let the grenade lever spring off while the grenade still in his hand, will be more macho, and can attract the attention of his gay platoon mates.

grenade throwing my favorite during itd. knn, wait whole.day just for few seconds of glory. but got chance to eat snake while waiting for other recruits turn to throw. also spend lot of money on mobile canteen break.

Not sure if you guys remember this grenade incident few years back.. It was reported in the Shit Times then..

Quite a similar situation.. A Lt rescued a recruit during a grenade training.. The Lt was then given a medal for his bravery..

I think Second Lieutenant Kamalasivam will also be given some sort of a commendation in the coming months..

hehehe. bro moo, i be frank, i still scare die like thay especially bomb. think after i pass to next, i will turn away and take cover liaoz. (if my hands dont shake and drop in front of me.)

They never tekan recruits in live range. Got a few times in 80 s to early 90s a few recruits turn around and open a new hole in superior's head
