[TD="colspan: 2"] SINGAPORE: It was supposed to be a consignment of frozen squid and cuttlefish, but it turned out to be a cover for contraband cigarettes.
The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said they seized 5,000 cartons of the contraband items on Friday morning from a 40-footer refrigerated container.
The Malaysian-registered container claimed to be transporting frozen squid and cuttlefish, but officers became suspicious when they spotted different packaging and markings. Further checks showed up the contraband cigarettes stacked deep inside the refrigerated container.
The ICA said this is one of its largest single seizures of contraband cigarettes at the checkpoints this year.
Three Malaysians, aged between 36 and 40, have been handed over to police for investigation.
The duty payable on the contraband cigarettes is estimated to be more than S$352,000.
