I have experienced first-hand the impartiality and swiftness with which the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (Iras), the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) and the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) dispense their duties when I faced difficulties shortly after I left my former Singapore employer for health reasons. I sought help through the Iras feedback website after I discovered that my tax liability had not been settled despite the withholding of my July and August salaries. Within four days, I received an Iras reply stating that it had settled my tax liabilities with my employer. Iras also advised me that I could now collect the rest of my pay from my ex-employer.
MOM was equally efficient in addressing my appeal for help by providing me a conciliator who helped me with advice on avenues for seeking relief; and assured me that the agency would work towards the resolution of my grievances to the best of its ability.
When my Employment Pass was cancelled and I found out that no short-term visit pass was applied for on my behalf by my former employer, the ICA acted quickly on the Philippine Embassy's request here for the regularisation of my stay in the country.
And I cannot discount the valuable advice and help that the Philippine Embassy has provided.
It is reassuring and gratifying to know that foreign workers like me who are away from our home country and from everything familiar to us can depend on fair treatment from government agencies in Singapore, which indeed take the welfare of its foreign manpower seriously.
