A job at last, thanks to WDA
AN ENGINEER, Mr Ang Hock Hoe, was 'lost, confused and wandering in the streets' after he was laid off in 1999.
For about 10 years, he worked as a part-time salesman and odd-job labourer. But in June this year, his fortune changed.
Singapore Technologies Aerospace, an aircraft repair company, gave the 49-year-old a full-time job as a senior technician. He landed the job after the Workforce Development Agency (WDA), which he approached earlier this year, sent him for a course on preparing for job interviews.
The help he received convinces him that Seagate workers can gain from approaching the WDA and the Employment and Employability Institute (e2i) to explore training and job opportunities.
The American hard-disk maker announced on Tuesday that it would retrench 2,000 workers by the end of next year.
Mr Ang said the Seagate workers will be luckier than him because 'when I was retrenched, I didn't know where to turn to for help'.
A one-stop training and job matching centre located at Redhill Road, e2i was launched last year, while the WDA, a statutory board that develops adult training frameworks, was set up in 2003.
Mr Ang, who has a 19-year-old daughter and a 21-year-old son, also had a piece of advice for Seagate workers: Look forward and stay positive.
'It was tough for me, but like driving, you cannot keep looking at the rear-view mirror. You have to look forward,' he said.
Mr Ang has a diploma in mechanical engineering and is now attending a course in aerospace maintenance under the Skills Programme for Upgrading and Resilience, a government programme that subsidises workers' training.
After the course ends this month, he will receive on-the-job training for one year.
Delighted with the opportunity to pick up new skills, he said: 'It's never too late to learn. Even Colonel Sanders, founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken, became successful in his 60s. So I've still got time.'

I woke up scared and crying at Shangrila Hotel at 3 am yesterday when I dreamt of these evil fucks of the high, middle and low classes still being alive.
