Extra public holiday a bane for cabbies
WHILE most Singaporeans cheered the good news that Aug 7 will be a public holiday ("SG50 surprise holiday on Aug 7"; Sunday), many of my fellow cabbies found little reason to cheer.
It is good that Singaporeans get an extra public holiday to enjoy SG50, but for cabbies, it means one fewer day to earn a normal income to cover our high cab rentals and other costs for the day.
Unlike workers who get paid extra for working on a public holiday, taxi drivers have to continue plying the roads on a public holiday to cover costs, with the added problem of having fewer passengers.
It is heartening to learn that many organisations are planning to offer discounts and privileges to Singaporeans to celebrate SG50. I hope taxi operators will offer a special SG50 50 per cent discount on cab rentals, or even waive rent, for hard-working cabbies who ply the roads during the long SG50 National Day weekend.
This goodwill gesture will be greatly appreciated and would not cause a huge dent to the operators' bottom line.
May the whole nation enjoy the glory of SG50.
