Hundreds gather to bid farewell to murdered activist

PETALING JAYA: Hundreds of people paid their final respects Wednesday to social activist Irene Ong Ai Siam, who was stabbed to death by two motorcylists in Bukit Gasing on Saturday.
An air of gloom settled over the Gui Yan crematorium here as her loved ones, including relatives, friends, colleagues and neighbours, gathered to say goodbye to the woman whose smile, they said, could light up an entire room.
An assortment of flowers was placed on her wooden casket by mourners.
Ong, 53, was tragically killed Saturday evening, stabbed to death by two motor cyclists believed to be snatch thieves, after she had finished jogging at Bukit Gasing.
She leaves behind husband Chin Wing San and two daughters Chin Hui Ying, 21 and Chin Hui Wei, 17, who appeared calm as they received well wishers at the funeral parlour.
SHAH ALAM: Four teenagers have been detained by police in connection with the attempted robbery and murder of social activist Ong Ai Siam in Bukit Gasing.
The four males, aged between 16 and 18, were arrested by the Selangor police task force at the flats of Sri Medan and Bukit Gasing Indah yesterday and have been remanded until April 29.
Selangor police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah said the task force picked up two youths, aged 16 and 18, at about 1.30am at the Sri Medan flats and two others aged 17 and 18 in the Bukit Gasing Indah flats at 3.30am.
“We believe the four suspects are involved in the attempted robbery and murder of the 52-year-old victim,” he told a press conference at the state police headquarters yesterday.
DCP Tun Hisan clarified that the incident did not occur at the Bukit Gasing jogging track but at a secluded road near it.
“I assure the public that the Bukit Gasing jogging track is safe. But police will increase patrols at the track and its surrounding areas,” he said.
He added that a team of policemen had patrolled the area at about 1.30pm on that day but the incident occurred some three hours later.
“Based on our record, this is the first case which happened in the area. It is an isolated incident but police will remain vigilant,” he said.
DCP Tun Hisan said Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Arjunaidi Mohamad had already met the area's residents association to explain the matter and would meet residents at 2.30pm today.
Ong had bravely defended her teenage daughter from a knife-wielding attacker when they were strolling in Bukit Gasing here at about 4.30pm on Saturday.
She pushed her daughter away during the incident and shouted at her to run to safety when they were approached by the robbers armed with knives.
When the 17-year-old girl ran for help, Ong blocked the robbers who then stabbed her several times before escaping without taking her belongings, which were placed in two small bags.
Her daughter, who returned with help, found her mother lying in a pool of blood and holding the bags.
Ong was rushed to the University Malaya Medical Centre but was pronounced dead on arrival.

SUSPECTS REMANDED: Police on the verge of completing Irene Ong's murder probe with arrest of six, seizure of motorcycle
PETALING JAYA: POLICE are moving closer to wrapping up their investigation into the murder of Irene Ong Ai Siam, 52, following the arrest of two men on Thursday.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner Arjunaidi Mohamed said the two suspects, in their 20s, were arrested in Kuala Lumpur. Police also seized a motorcycle from one of the suspects. This brings to six the number of suspects held in connection with Ong's murder.
The housewife and homemaker is survived by her husband Chin Wing San and daughters, Chin Hui Ying and Hui Wei. Arjunaidi declined to comment on the arrest of the two suspects or their background but expressed confidence that investigations would be wrapped up soon.
Earlier on Tuesday, police arrested four youths, aged between 16 and 18, at the Seri Medan and Bukit Gasing flats. All six suspects were remanded to facilitate investigations.
Arjunaidi added that a police mobile beat base had begun operating in Bukit Gasing on Saturday to ensure the safety of joggers and those out on walks in the area.
"The mobile beat base operates for six hours daily, from 7am to 10am and from 4pm to 7pm. "It will also operate during weekends and public holidays as traffic is heavier during these periods," he said.
On April 20, Ong was jogging with her daughter, Hui Wei, 17, when two men on a motorcycle approached them. They demanded a sling bag carried by Ong. However, she put up a fight to protect her daughter and one of the suspects stabbed her several times before they fled the scene empty-handed.
She was rushed to University Malaya Medical Centre but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
