SINGAPORE:One person died after a massive fire broke out at a Jurong industrial area that involved hundreds of LPG cylinders, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said on Friday (Jun 21).
SCDF said it was alerted to the incident at 43 Jalan Buroh at about 5.10pm. The fire was brought under control at about 7.30pm, it added.

"The raging fire involved Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders in an LPG facility of about two football fields in size," it added in a Facebook post.
An SCDF spokesman at the scene said the fire involved hundreds of LPG cylinders, the largest number the force has seen battling a fire.

Two workers suffered burn injuries and were taken to Singapore General Hospital.

About six SCDF emergency response vehicles and three police cars were at the scene when CNA visited the site at about 6pm.

At least two men were sitting by the side of the road with injuries. One had bandages on his arm and knee. The other had bandages on his arm, back and the side of his head, and was later helped into a wheelchair by emergency responders.

SGSecure mobile app users with M1, StarHub and Singtel within the immediate vicinity of the fire have received an advisory message urging them to stay away from the affected area, said SCDF.

Videos sent to CNA show flames and clouds of thick smoke rising from the area. Residents reported hearing multiple sounds of explosions.

Eyewitnesses said smoke from the fire could be seen from areas including Teban Gardens, Clementi, Cantonment Road and as far away as Bishan.

Smoke seen from an apartment in the Bishan area near Lornie Road.

CNA reader Carol Lee said she was picking her husband up at the building opposite the fire, and could feel the heat from where she was about 200m away.
"I saw the fire follow by an explosion sound a lot of times until can't count. It was very scary. The smoke smelt like chemicals, not the normal smoke," she said.

Another CNA reader, Muhammad Farihin, described what he saw as "balls of fire" from his apartment at Yung Kuang Road. "There were explosions too," he added.
Lilliane Reyes was changing her toddler when she heard what she thought was "loud thunder".
"I just thought that was just a very loud thunder then the baby said 'ohh, what's that?' ... Then when I stood up I saw big dark smoke."
Michael Toh was travelling from Tuas Checkpoint towards the city when he saw the fire.
"There was thick black mushroom smoke skywards. Traffic slowed down due to the distraction and partially due to peak hours jam," he said.

SINGAPORE - Several loud explosions were heard as a fire broke out in Jurong on Friday (June 21).
In a Facebook post at 5.43pm, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it had been alerted to a fire at 43 Jalan Buroh and that firefighting operations were ongoing.
"SGSecure mobile app users of M1, StarHub and Singtel who are within the immediate vicinity of the fire incident would have received an advisory message urging them and members of public to stay away from the affected area," the post added.
Water jets were deployed to surround the fire, SCDF said.
At 8.02pm, SCDF said that the fire involved liquified petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders in an LPG facility about the size of two football fields.
"LPG Cylinders pose an explosion hazard when subjected to high temperatures," the post said, adding that SCDF officers are on high alert.

Two workers suffered burns and were taken to Singapore General Hospital. A body was found and pronounced dead at the scene by a SCDF paramedic.

In a final update at 9.20pm, SCDF said that a total of 35 emergency vehicles and 120 firefighters were deployed to the scene.
The fire involved hundreds of highly flammable LPG cylinders of various sizes and spread rapidly.
"Firefighters faced intense heat amidst exploding LPG cylinders while preventing the fire from spreading to larger LPG storage tanks nearby," the post added.
At the height of the firefighting operations, seven water jets, including an unmanned firefighting machine, were used to mitigate the fire.
The fire was brought under control at 7.30pm.

Reader Linda Cheng, 29, who lives in Boon Lay Avenue, told The Straits Times that she heard the loud explosions from her home around 5.20pm.
She took several videos of the area from which the sounds were heard, which showed thick smoke coming from a building in the distance.

There was also a strong burning smell in the area, she said.
"We thought the loud explosions were thunder, until we saw the thick smoke," Ms Cheng said.

Another eyewitness, who only wanted to be known as Mr Poh, told ST that he noticed the fire around 5pm.

"I heard about 10 to 20 loud explosions," he said, adding that the explosions stopped after a while.
"The fire looks to be under control, but there's still a lot of black smoke," he told ST at around 5.50pm.

Mr Anthony Tai, who works in the logistics line, said he was at home in Yuan Ching Road, about 4km away, when he heard multiple loud explosions shortly after 5pm. "I could see large, dark smoke from my window on the 10th floor," said the 63-year-old.

A reader, who wanted to remain anonymous, took several videos of the fire from 47 Jalan Buroh, which is located across the road. There were people running out of the warehouse building when the fire started, he said.
Photos circulating online showed the smoke could be seen from as far away as Jurong East, about 7km away.
