SINGAPORE: Six workers were injured in an incident at the junction of Aljunied Road and MacPherson Road on Wednesday afternoon.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said that it received a call at about 2.50 p.m.
The workers — Thai nationals aged between 27 and 50 — suffered minor burns on their faces and upper limbs. They had been carrying out works at a manhole.
All were sent to the Singapore General Hospital. Two workers are in the Intensive Care Unit.
The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) said the incident site was an unused sewage chamber.
Initial findings showed that the workers were supposed to seal two pipes within the chamber by filling them up with a cement compound. They were preparing the worksite for this, when the accident happened.
The work was carried out by Ohin Construction, which was appointed by the Public Utilities Board to seal up several unused sewage pipes across Singapore.
MOM has issued a stop work order on this project pending investigations. Separately, investigations are on—going to determine the cause of the explosion at the site.
MOM said after putting out the fire, SCDF had conducted a gas check in the chamber, and flammable gases were detected. The ministry said it will look into the source of the gas leakage and the possible source of ignition.
Part of Macpherson Road — from Genting Lane to Aljunied Road — will remain closed to traffic until further notice.
