Boy, 9, hit by truck
A NINE-YEAR-OLD boy died on Monday when he was hit by a tipper truck while using a zebra crossing.
Li Yun, a Primary 4 pupil at Pei Tong Primary School, was walking to the bus stop after school around 4.45pm, accompanied by his grandmother.
As he was crossing the road at Clementi Avenue 4, he was hit by a tipper truck. His grandmother, walking behind him, escaped injury.
He suffered multiple injuries and died an hour after being sent to hospital.
Li Yun's family moved to Singapore from Jiangxi, China in 1997. His father, Mr Li Changrun is a life sciences researcher at the Agency for Science, Technology And Research. He is now a Singapore citizen.

Mr Li also told Shin Min that his son was a quiet boy who excelled in his studies.( What this got to do with the road-kill? Gain sympathy or gain elitism votes)
"His results were very good, and I had hoped that he could follow in my footsteps and work in a research-related field. I did not expect that he would leave so suddenly."
Could accident have been avoided?
According to Li Yun's grandmother, they were waiting for his younger brother to finish his kindergarten classes when Li Yun suggested that he wanted to go home first to read his books.
Usually, they would have waited for his younger brother to finish his class at Clementi Ave 4 before going home together, but for some reason, Li Yun was impatient that day.

His grandmother left his 12-year-old sister at the kindergarten and was accompanying him to the bus stop to take a bus back home, which was only three bus stops away.
That was when he was run over by the truck right before her eyes.
Driver did not see boy
The driver said that he did not see the boy, which was why he drove across the zebra crossing.
He realised something was wrong when he heard his rear tyres run over something, and stopped to check.
That was when he saw the boy's legs sticking out from under the truck, and blood flowing freely onto the road. He called for an ambulance immediately.

At that time, Li Yun was still conscious and crying in pain. His grandmother held him in her arms.
According to the driver, the truck could have caught Li Yun's shirt as the boy was crossing the zebra crossing, and knocked him down.
