Dear King
Ohhh one should read my side of History and see how Chin Peng was just as much a bastard as LKY.
The Communist were not imagined, and they were real threat politically and militarily. They were the real thing not the screwed up do gooder marxists of the eighties
Locke
Not saying that Chin Peng and the MCP didnt exist. But declassed archives now said that Chin Siong and co. were not Communists. What about you? How do you think?
Dear King
Food for thought when asked by Australian academics whether Lim C S was ever a Communist or supported Communist Activities etc. Chin Peng replied that LCS was not a CPM Member a direct question with a half answer.
Interestingly enough there were non party members who were allowed to support and help out with the CPM. Juliet Chin comes to mind who was spoken of in Chin Peng's Autobiography she was a radio announcer in China for CPM radio and she was not a member. Dr Lim said he was not a member ......etc etc.
Cold Store, Chin Peng admitted to it gutting out the communist underground. We know that Cold Store wiped out the Barisan so was the Barisan part of the Communist Underground ?
Btw CP was as double faced a politician and any of those day. In 1959 he errr gave up or limited the military struggle because of defeat and necessity but never envisaged giving up armed revolution in any form even as he sought to intensify the political struggle
My answer not a communist party member, communist, but a supporter and part of the CPM legitimate political front definitely

Actually bro, the story is longer than that. Prior to you joining this forum, this was raised a number of times. When Chin Peng was debriefed voluntarily in Canberra by a panel of experts on Communism, he conveniently sidestepped the Singapore Communists details when asked. One of those debriefing him from Singapore spent time throwing accolades Chin Peng's way rather than ferret out the truth. The Angmos at the debriefing must have sensed that if the Singapore rep was not keen to find the "truth", they were not going to pursue it. This singapore chap was a founding member of the University of Singapore Political Association and knew the game better than most. It was the same outfit that published Fajar.
As you would know, many of the communist leaders were very close friends of Raja, Devan, Keng Swee, the old man and other members of the PAP. When Goh retired, he became a conduit for bringing them back from Beijing and finding employment here. He made arrangements for their kids to be employed at places such as SPH, Singapore Technologies and couple of Institutes associated with NUS/NTU. Interestingly one of those chaps who crossed early and threw his lot with the PAP, ended up having a son running the Intelliegence Dept of SAF in recent times.
Those that spilled the beans while in detention were released and were placed in Govt payroll including PA which was its original purpose.
It was done to protect the families of ex-communists in modern Singapore. Bear in mind, at that time, Communism appealed to the Intellectuals and the really smart ones and they were keen to overthrow the Colonials. I would have probably been in the thick of communism because of its appeal to make society classless and the fact that smart and passionate people were drawn to it.
The oral archives will reveal more when the time seal expires. In it you will find a narrative by a Special Branch Officer who raided a pineapple plantation of a Rich Towkay in Kranji where an attic in an outhouse was used as a dropbox by Chin Siong to communicate with his superiors. A number of messages were recovered and handwriting analysis confirmed that it was Chin Peng. The Towkay's son was in it being an impressionable young chap. With the help of the British, the Towkay coaxed his son to cooperate and in exchange was sent to Britian to complete his studies. He went on to become a successful businessman in HK. By the way, the special branch officer was educated in Cambridge, was from HK and the then Governor General brought him in specially as he was well educated and that he was an oriental. That special branch officer went on to become a Perm Sec. He was also one of 2 officers to debrief old man and his wife on their return from UK studies as old man was suspected to be a communist and the fact that his younger brother ended up joining a communist parade in East Europe in the company of well known Malaya communists.
By the way, the political correct term to use for ex-communist is "Marxist". Which I understand is acceptable to them.
Just to point out that things tend to come around in a full circle. Dominic Puthucheary's son is now a medical doctor and migrated to Singapore. He is now a member of PAP. The name "Laniaz" in the 1961 press release is Zainal in reverse. Old man did not want the Malays to be offended. Zainal is in its self a code word for Samad Ismail. Samad Ismail and Eu Chooi Yip make up 2 of the top 3 communists in Singapore. Samad is the crucial figure that brought Chin Siong and Fong to the basement of old man's house and the rest is history. Samad is a founding member of the basement gang as well as the PAP and well entrenched member of CPM.
Wld be a great pleasure to meet u one day.
That's a very bad idea. Never mix cyberspace with real life. The results are always tragic.

Scro, I'm truly amazed and impressed at how much and deep your grasp of local polit history. It'll be interesting to guess what you are/were: an ex-journalist, born in the early 40s, settled in Oz, widely connected thru yr past Press network, Chinese male, UOM batch?
