Google's translation as 挫败目的 is literally too literal.
挫败目的 is actually correct although seldom used as English and Chinese ways of expression are different.
For example, you could say "他的行为挫折了我的目的 to mean "His actions thwarted my purpose."
Normally in Chinese we used the following to convey similar meaning...:
达不到目的 - 这样一来不是达不到目的了吗?
违背我们的目的/初衷 - 不行, 那样会违背我们的目的/初衷
