SINGAPORE: 150 officers graduated from two courses for senior military commanders on Friday.

In a ceremony held at the Istana, Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean presented certificates to graduates of the courses.

The graduates are regular and National Service officers from the Singapore Armed Forces, who have completed the "40th Command and Staff Course" and the "10th National Service Command and Staff Course".

The courses prepare officers for senior positions in the armed forces.

Other participants include those from countries like China, India and the United States.

This is the first time the graduation ceremonies of the two courses have been combined.......CNA

I see little point in Singapore having an armed force in the first place.

One of the primary responsibilities of any defence force is to keep unwelcome foreigners out the country. However, for some strange reason, unwelcome aliens are give a red carpet greeting instead..

What a strange country.

Many people must share your views thats why the PAP is making it very difficult for young male children to escape their commitment.

Even ex-Sporeans who've escaped are coerced into contributing 2 years if they want to work in Spore

You're right. There's no need for any country to invade Singapore. Just send their migrants over and apply for PR. The navy and marine police (mostly regulars) are sufficient to patrol the coastline. The air force (all regulars), technically and numerically the most advanced and powerful in SE Asia, is sufficient deterrent for a radius covering KL, Bangkok, Manila and Jakarta. However, there's a need for massive conscripted land armed forces in Singapore, not to fight foreigners, but just in case of a freak election result.

They don't even dare to ask one old man nicely to step down and enjoy the remainder of his life, how the hell do you expect them to drive off invaders?

Heck, they don't even dare to question the old man's decree. This is not respect for the elderly, this is pure gutless spineless cowardice and self-centredness.

perhaps one of the reason could be that if without NS, our employment figures might even look badder:(

or maybe NS has crippled our decisive or rational mind and hence paps get themselves voted in for every GE:confused:

These grown up children of ex-Singaporeans must really have their brains tested for low IQ.

Don't the above nitwits know that Singaporeans themselves are being replaced by FTs for jobs and they still want to come back and do NS to work in SG????

The moment an ex Sinkie gets a foreign PR his children will be permanently blacklisted in GLC/GIC or civil service jobs regardless of whether they come back and do NS or not!

One clown, a teenage son of one ex Singaporean, I know (NZ PR) but still holding PINK IC wanted to come back and sign on as a SAF regular (hoping to get into OCS). He got rejected outright and serve his NS as a conscript and ORD as an NCO only.

One must indeed be a REAL LOSER to be unable to find employment anywhere in the world exept in Singapore!

Even the FTs are smarter than that, their children enjoy the status of SG PRs (Education/Health subsidies etc) and then get to run back to their home countries without any need to do NS!!!

Is this how temple thief fished money out?

By Lediati Tan

WHEN donations to the temple fell by 20 per cent in the past two months, he initially thought it was linked to the recession.

But Mr Liew Weng Kwong, 58, the chairman of a market committee that looks after the temple, now believes someone may have been helping himself to the money inside the donation box using a crudely-made device.

The makeshift Tua Pek Kong temple at Block 724, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 6 is about 10m from the market and stall holders help to look after it.

Mr Liew said he and three other stall holders, who are also committee members, discovered the device when they opened up the donation box located beneath the altar on October 10.

It was made out of a 30cm metal wire with a small, folded piece of cardboard attached to one end. Double-sided sticky tape was stuck on one side of the cardboard.

Mr Liew believes the device was used to fish money out of the donation box, which has seven locks.

$2 stuck to it

He said there was a $2 note stuck to the piece of cardboard and a bag of coins.

Mr Liew said he and the other stall holders tested the device by using it to pick money out of the box and found it could be done easily.

He feels the thief could have accidentally dropped the device into the box while trying to take money out.

When Mr Liew opened the donation box, he said there was $295 inside, but claimed it was the smallest amount collected since they started looking after the temple in February.

The box is emptied twice a month. Before October 10, this was done on September 26.

Mr Liew said "a few hundred dollars" may have been lost as the temple should have received more donations over the Mid-Autumn Festival at the beginning of this month.

He didn't want to give a specific figure.

Celebrations and decorations

He added that apart from donating to charity, the money is used to pay for Tua Pek Kong's birthday celebrations and to buy decorations for the market for special events such as Chinese New Year and National Day.

The stall holders did not make a police report as they did not have much proof except for the device.

But a day after they discovered the device, they spent $500 to install two CCTV cameras at the temple.

Some stall holders told The New Paper that the Tua Pek Kong temple is at least 30 years old, and was moved from within the market to outside after the market underwent refurbishment about two years ago.

finally, how the temple thief bob sim kheng hwee aka leetahbar, steals the money from donation box is revealed!!!

Those who left at a young age probably don't really know the realities of Spore. :(

The only case of a returning ex-Sporean doing NS was an Aussie whose parents left before he was 12 years old. He had the misfortune to marry a Sporean who was studying in Aust

Told him he was making a mistake but he was upbeat & I think the wife is the one being selfish. She put her interests before her husbands, a sign that the marriage is heading for future troubles. If ever they get divorced he will be hit by the womens charter & 2 years lost in NS.

Many foreigners do not know the reality of living in singapore, that includes many expats who have been staying here for years - becos the oppressive sg laws do not apply to them.

Some silly sinkees or ex-sinkees think it's a noble thing to return because it's their 'home', just like how some overseas Israelis go to Israel to do NS. But they'll soon learn a lesson they shall not forget.

Yup exactly:smile: This ex-Spore Aussie really thought NS was noble & fun
Never mind that he's now an Australian citizen.

After a while everyone wakes up to the realities in Spore. Only a matter of when.

When this ex-colleague(ex-Spore Aussie) realises he's thrown away 2 years of his life/decent pay for his wife, he's going to start resenting her. Add to the pressures of life here, he'll probably end up another divorce statistic

NS provides this Nation with Cheap workers for "Security" and set up of Huge events (yearly NDP, IMF, APEC).

they can outsource that to the cheaper FTs. just wondering why they didn't do it?

ANSWER: if they ve done that, sgp unemployment would be sky rocket high!

No lah how many FT can live with NS pay

Even the cheapest foreigners needs a liveable wage & NS pay can at best be described as pocket money.

Those doing NS are being supported by their parents & the PAP is essentially getting free labor.
