当地时间9月18日16时30分，一架翼展近80米的空客A380客机在马尔代夫维拉纳国际机场新建跑道平稳着陆。“空中巨无霸”机型在新跑道上首次成功试飞，标志着这座由中国公司承建的国际机场新跑道将全面完工并投入使用，更意味着马尔代夫国际机场飞行区的等级提升到4F级，可满足A380等F级机型的使用。时任马尔代夫总统的亚明在致辞中表示，此次大飞机成功起降，预示着维拉纳国际机场可以承载更多来自远方的各国朋友到马尔代夫，这将推动马尔代夫旅游经济飞跃发展，马尔代夫人民热切期盼新机场早日交付使用，感谢中资企业在新机场建设中作出的贡献。

为此中国企业在不影响老跑道期间的情况下，采取吹填的方式建设新的跑道。在施工中中国公司发现马尔代夫唯一的建筑材料仅有珊瑚砂，而在珊瑚砂上建机场尚属世界首例，国际上也没有先例可循。中国公司在实践中尝试，在尝试中积累经验。通过学习借鉴当地吹填经验，项目部采用直接吹填的裸吹施工工艺，减少了临时围堰的海上作业量，降低了风险和成本。最终，项目部完成了约540万立方米的填方量，大致相当于两个半昆明湖大小。不仅有技术和施工方法的创新，也包含管理模式的的创新，填补了中国企业海外填海造机场的技术空白。
