Housewife charged with cheating five people while awaiting trial - for cheating
BY LOSHANA K SHAGAR
KUALA LUMPUR: A housewife previously charged with 17 counts of cheating involving RM1.5mil was slapped with another six similar charges at a Sessions Court here.
Suriani Ahmad, 47, claimed trial Monday to deceiving five people into handing her money in the belief that she could secure Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) Museum supply projects for their companies.
For the first charge, she was accused of cheating Junaidah Mohd Nasir from JR Binatech Sdn Bhd into paying RM342,100 to secure a supply project.
For the second and third charges, she allegedly cheated Azlan Shuib, who represented Mamudi Enterprise and Bata Trading, by using an unauthorised request order (pesanan kerajaan), which led him to pay her RM1.2mil and over RM1mil respectively.
For the fourth charge, she was accused of deceiving Abdul Hamid Man from Midman Enterprise by using an unauthorised request order, inducing him to pay RM218,540.
For the fifth charge, she was accused of dishonestly inducing Rozi Hamid to pay RM216,470 for a non-existent project.
For the sixth charge, she had allegedly used an unauthorised request order to convince Abdul Bostani Abdul Rahman from Regu Dinamik Sdn Bhd to pay her RM421,995.
The offences committed at the PDRM Museum between March 30, 2010 and March 2011 fall under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to 10 years with whipping and a possible fine for each charge, if convicted.
In February, Suriani had claimed trial at another Sessions Court here to 17 charges of cheating six contractors in connection with projects for the museum.
Defence counsel S. Subramaniam requested bail at RM20,000 for all charges, the same amount as with her previous 17 charges.
He added that the accused also had four family members to support.
Deputy public prosecutor Amira Sariaty Zainal raised no objection to the request.
Judge Mat Ghani Abdullah told Suriani he sympathised with her as it was Ramadan and Hari Raya was around the corner.
He then allowed bail at RM20,000 in one surety, and fixed Aug 22 for mention.
