The US Geological survey said the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.3 and struck 260 miles off the coast of Banda Aceh province.
In Banda Aceh, the ground shook for 30 seconds and terrified residents rushed out of their homes, but they returned indoors shortly after, according to witnesses.
The Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the seismological agency of Indonesia measure the strength of the quake at 7.6.
It was centred 18 miles beneath the ocean floor.
"The quake was in the sea and a tsunami warning is in force, but so far we have no reports of casualties or damage," Suharjono, the agency's technical chief, told the French news agency AFP.

Earlier, Indonesia's government had issued a tsunami warning, but it was subsequently lifted more than an hour later.
Indonesia is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.
On December 26, 2004, a giant quake measuring 9.1-9.3 on the Richter scale triggered a tsunami in the Indian Ocean that killed 230,000 people, half of them in Aceh.
It was the third largest earthquake ever recorded on a seismograph.
In October 2010, a 7.7 magnitude quake struck just off the Mentawai Islands off Sumatra's western coast, killing at least 435 people on the islands.
