Singaporeans who commit hostage taking offences abroad will soon have to face the long arm of a new law back at home.

The Hostage Taking Act was introduced in Parliament yesterday by Deputy Prime Minister and Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng.

Under the proposed legislation, a person who, commits abroad what would constitute a hostage taking offence here, is deemed to have committed the act in Singapore.

This would allow for the offender to be charged, tried and punished accordingly.

The law also states that anyone in Singapore who has information which can prevent the offence or secure the apprehension or conviction of the suspect must immediately inform the police.

Under the Act, the public prosecutor can also order a bank account to be frozen if he is satisfied that money for paying the ransom is likely to be paid out from the account.

They are worried about their offspring studying or working overseas. Outside of tiny Sinkieland, they have very little influence or power.

Those who have dual citizenship might one to consider relinquishing the Singapore one. Quite a number of kids and families from the PAP ruling party are working, studying and living overseas. The threat is real to them for the oppression that they created here. Can you imagine, no laws on race discrimination and minimum wage in the workplace but can think of such laws.

Reminds me of Pakistan and the middle east where the rulling elite have families in London, Paris and NY but screw their own country while plundering the wealth.

Many of these kids have married foreigners who hold on their citizenship and their offspring are now holding dual citizenship. By the time they are 11 years old, they leave the country while their parents milk the system.

now why would they have this new law??

Yes, this is strange, so far no one knows the reason for it.

The law raises a few points:

1. If the person has served time for the offence overseas, will the person do time again when he returns to Singapore?

2. Since when the Singapore government thinks Singaporeans are violent - that Singaporeans will take hostages while overseas?

Classic. After Kwa Geok Choo is warded in hospital, estate duty law was abolished. After Li Hongyi has gone to Massachusetts for studies, foreign hostage taking law is enacted.

That is one possible reason for the Hostage Taking Act. But looks like this law applies to both Singaporeans and foreigners, so it does not matter if the person is no longer Singaporean, the offence commited overseas is deemed to have committed in Singapore. Just don't step on Singapore soil.
