There was tight security at an Apple store in Hong Kong early on Friday morning, with crowds of people eager to buy the newly released iPhone 5, reports the state-run news agency CNS.
Only customers who had pre-ordered via Apple's website were allowed to get their hands on the new smartphone, however. The atmosphere in the store, inside a shopping mall in the International Finance Center building, was reportedly orderly. The store's employees chanted "iPhone 5! iPhone 5!" before the shop opened. Customers in the queue with prior reservations were escorted into the store after it opened at 8 am.
The first customer, aged 26, bought two of the new device — one for himself and the other for his girlfriend.
The price of the smartphone in Hong Kong ranges from US$820-$920 depending on the model. Grey market sellers were also reportedly in the area of the store to receive the phones from people who had bought them by pre-order to sell on again at prices starting from US$900 each. One cell phone store owner said he is likely to receive 200 of the phones and sell them on.
