BESUT, Malaysia - The police have plugged the notorious Hole-in-the-Wall' gang of burglars which bored its way into goldsmith shops, godowns and supermarkets in four states, with the arrest of five foreigners.

The suspects, from a neighbouring country, were picked up in two separate operations about noon on Tuesday and yesterday morning.

Seized from the suspects were four wall-boring equipment, saw, metal and wire cutters, screw- drivers, scissors, five mobile phones and a laptop, among others.

Initial investigations have revealed the gang had escaped with an assortment of valuables and cash after breaking into goldsmith outlets, godowns and supermarkets in Terengganu, Kelantan, Johor and Selangor.

Their activities were carried out over the past few months.

Terengganu CID chief ACP K. Manoharan said the suspects could shed light on a heist at a Kuala Best goldsmith shop which reported a loss of RM250,000 in jewellery on Aug 29.

He said three of the suspects, aged 26, 33 and 36, were nabbed by Besut policemen on patrol in Jerteh town about noon yesterday.

Speaking to reporters at the Besut police headquarters here, Manoharan said the other two suspects, aged 20 and 21, were picked up at the Jerteh police station about 10.30am yesterday.

The duo had just arrived from Kuala Lumpur when a police team detained them to facilitate investigations into a spate of break-ins, he added.
