CHARLOTTE (North Carolina) - A New York judge is ordering former Merrill Lynch CEO John Thain to testify about bonuses paid to Merrill employees before the company was sold to Bank of America.

New York's Attorney General Andrew Cuomo filed a motion in the state's Supreme Court on Monday asking that Mr Thain be compelled to provide details on the bonuses, which he had declined to give during a deposition Thursday.
Mr Thain's spokesman Jesse Derris said later on Monday that the motion was granted and Mr Thain will answer the questions Tuesday.
Mr Thain said on Thursday he had been told by BoA not to divulge details about them.

He was dismissed from the combined company last month after news broke that Merrill paid US$3.6 billion in bonuses before it completed its sale. -- AP

It seems that Temasek is severe lacking in market research and in-depth analysis. Given the size of Temasek, I would suppose they should have developed a strong market research team with strong analytical expertise to support their investment decisions. Being a part of Singapore Gov't, Temasek should also have access to a lot of valuable market, social and political information that are not available to the average investor or even fund manager. Granted that they cannot possibly know everything that is going on, they should have a huge advantage over funds managers and they should perform much better. We cannot expect them not to lose on every deal they make but they should have a better overall result than any fund managers.
