A Christmas cleaning of the Church of the Nativity turned into scuffles on Wednesday between rival Christian clerics zealously guarding denominational turf at the holy site. Brooms and fists flew inside the church marking the birthplace of Jesus as some 100 priests and monks of the Greek Orthodox and Armenian Apostolic churches brawled.
Palestinian police, bending their heads to squeeze through the church’s low “door of humility,” rushed in with batons flailing to restore order. “It was a trivial problem that … occurs every year,” said police Lieutenant-Colonel Khaled al-Tamimi. “Everything is all right and things have returned to normal,” he said. “No one was arrested because all those involved were men of God.”
Administration of the 6th century Bethlehem church, the oldest in the Holy Land, is shared by Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox and Armenian clerics. Any perceived encroachment of jurisdictional boundaries within the church can set off a row, especially during the annual cleaning for Orthodox Christmas celebrations, which will be held next week.

Rival Monks Brawl While Cleaning Bethlehem Church

An annual Christmas cleaning ritual at the site where Jesus was said to be born deteriorated into a mass brawl Wednesday when rival monks began attacking each other with broomsticks, shouts and fists.
The fight, among priests and monks from the Greek Orthodox and Armenian denominations, took place at the Church of the Nativity, one of Christianity’s holiest churches. The monks were preparing the church for the upcoming Orthodox Christmas celebrations, celebrated in early January, and cleaning up from the Western Christian Christmas, celebrated on Dec. 25.
The Orthodox and Armenian denominations, along with the Latin denomination, jointly administer the church, built on the site where Christians believe Jesus was born more than 2,000 years ago in a manger after Mary and Joseph were turned away at an inn.
The church’s strong religious and historical significance have created tension among the three sects, with each closely guarding their own turf.
Their tenuous shareholder agreement dictates that each sect must approve any changes, no matter how minor, made to the holy site.
Renovations tentatively planned for next year to replace the church’s leaky roof will mark the first major repairs in 150 years. Negotiations for those repairs have gone on for years, long delayed by disagreement over who would pay.
The brawl that erupted on Wednesday ended when club-wielding Palestinian police stormed into the church.
No one was seriously injured in the fight, and it remains to be seen what exactly sparked this particular outburst.
“No one was arrested because all those involved were men of God,” said Bethlehem police Lt.-Col. Khaled al-Tamimi, who also noted that order was quickly restored.
This year’s cleaning ritual at the church is not the first that has gone off with incident. In 2007, seven priests were injured in a post-Christmas cleaning fight.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

The ancient church, built over the traditional site of Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem, is shared by three Christian denominations - Roman Catholics, Armenians and Greek Orthodox.
The violence broke out when the Armenian and Greek sides accused each other of crossing into each other's territory. Similar fights have taken place in past years.
The clerics screamed at each other and attacked one other with broomsticks inside Bethlehem’s Church of the Nativity. They were tidying up the church ahead of Orthodox Christmas celebrations in early January.
Palestinian security forces broke up the melee, and no serious injuries were reported.

Relations among the denominations at the ancient church are fragile, and to repair or clean a part of the structure is to own it, according to accepted practice.

That means that letting other sects clean part of the church could allow one to gain ground at another's expense. Similar fights have taken place during the same late-December cleaning effort in the past.

Tensions between rival clergy at the church have been a fact of life there for centuries and have often been caught up in international politics.

In the 1800s, friction between the denominations at the church - each backed by foreign powers - became so fraught that Russian tsar Nicholas I deployed troops along the Danube to threaten a Turkish sultan who had been favouring the Catholics over the Orthodox.

Those disagreements threaten the integrity of the church itself, which was originally built 1,500 years ago and parts of which have fallen into disrepair.

Although the roof has needed urgent work for decades, and leaking rainwater has ruined much of the priceless artwork inside, a renovation has been delayed by disagreements among the denominations over who would pay.

Only recently, the Palestinian Authority brokered an agreement to move ahead with replacing the roof, and officials hope work will begin next year.

Dozens of Christian monks armed with brooms brawled at the sacred site of Jesus’ birth yesterday when an annual cleanup turned into a turf war.
Palestinian riot police had to storm the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem and use batons and shields to break up the fight between rival groups of Greek Orthodox and Armenian clerics.
The Greeks and Armenians, along with Roman Catholics, share the 1,500-year-old church, which, according to Christian tradition, was built over the cave where Jesus was born.
Each group regards specific areas of the West Bank compound as theirs to administer.

The brawl began as monks were carrying out the annual routine of cleaning up the church following Christmas Day celebrations, when western Christian tourists fill Manger Square outside the church and sing carols.
The Greek Orthodox and Armenian Apostolic clerics were readying their sections in preparation for Orthodox Christmas, which is observed on Jan. 7.
But this year’s cleanup was marred when some monks began arguing over what they regarded as trespassing on their turf.
As shocked tourists looked on, the dispute grew into a shouting, broom-wielding fight involving about 100 clerics, witnesses said.
Palestinian police had to squeeze themselves past the low-hanging “Door of Humility” to hurry inside and restore order.
Two Palestinian Authority officials received minor injuries, officials said.
“No one was arrested because all of those involved were men of God,” Bethlehem Police Lt. Col. Khaled al-Tamimi said.
He shrugged off the incident. “Everything is all right, and things have returned to normal,” he said. “It was a trivial problem that . . . occurs every year.”

The ancient church, built over the traditional site of Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem, is shared by three Christian denominations — Roman Catholics, Armenians and Greek Orthodox. Wednesday’s fight erupted between Greek and Armenian clergy, with both sides accusing each other of encroaching on parts of the church to which they lay claim.

Palestinian security forces rushed in to break up the melee, and no serious injuries were reported. A Palestinian police spokesman would not immediately comment.

Thought the church is in Jerusalem? How come it is Palestinian Special Forces and not Israel? Is it in the Palestinian territories?

These Fools Missed The Entire Point Here !

VictMat113011.jpg

They missed the point. It's not that stupid historical site, it's the word. Jesus was just a temporary being borne in the flesh. The Roman soldiers gambled for his clothing and that was all they got, nothing more.
