A BROKEN wing mirror left behind after a hit-and-run accident set police on a search that eventually led to the arrest of a 54-year-old. he arrest came on the back of a drop in the number of hit-and-run cases. There were 213 such cases last year, down from 330 in 2008 and 306 in 2007. But the number of fatalities from these accidents has crept up from six in 2008 to 11 last year.
In the latest case, the suspect was caught after his Mazda 3 sedan hit a couple who were on the footpath at the junction of Rochor Canal Road and Bencoolen Street on Monday night. Student Nursakinah Mohamed Pauzi, 19, escaped with minor injuries, but her boyfriend, Mr Mohammad Nurhafiz Mohamed Safiee, 21, remains in the intensive care unit of Tan Tock Seng Hospital with head injuries. Police found the car at an Ang Mo Kio workshop and arrested the suspect on Tuesday.
