<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"-->SINGAPORE-BASED transport giant ComfortDelGro Corp has bought the largest taxi booking service in Liverpool, Britain.
Through 51 per cent owned subsidiary CityFleet (UK), ComfortDelGro bought Merseyside Radio Meter Cabs Ltd for £800,000 (about S$2.07 million).
Better known as Merseycabs, the 50-year-old company runs a cab despatching business - known in the UK as a taxi radio circuit - which covers 400 Black cabs.
With the acquisition, ComfortDelGro now has a fleet of 4,500 taxis in its despatch networks in London, Birmingham, Liverpool, Edinburgh and Aberdeen. That makes it the largest taxi despatch operator in the UK.
All the 4,500 taxis offer the Cabcharge cashless payment system. Commuters are billed later, just like for their credit card purchases.
ComfortDelGro is no stranger to the UK. It bought London-based bus operator Metroline back in 2000 for £73.8 million (about $202 million then). It is also the majority owner of Scottish CityLink, a coach operator in Scotland.
