btw, there's much confusion over the word "highfalutin". many here think it's from the uk, just because the old man mentioned it. it's not.
it's native to the u.s. it was used in folk speech during the 19th century on the east coast, especially in political circles in washington. "high fluting" which eventually evolved to highfalutin refers to a person, usually a lame arrogant politician, who thinks highly of himself. it became popularly known in literal or scholarly circles when mencken put it in print in the book "the american language."
