High roller gambler fined $10k for bringing in $836k without reporting it

With $436,000 in a bag and an additional $400,000 stuffed in his underwear, a Vietnamese businessman was stopped at the airport and arrested for failing to declare the amount of money he was bringing into Singapore.

On Thursday, Tran Ngoc Khoi, 36, was fined $10,000 by a district court.

Anyone moving $30,000 or more, or the equivalent in a foreign currency, must submit a report at a checkpoint. Failure to do this could mean a fine of up to $50,000 or up to three years in jail, or both.

As police investigations have revealed that Tran was bringing in the $836,000 to help three friends to pay off their gambling debts with Marina Bay Sands casino, the cash seized by the police will be returned to him.

Likely a junket unless police confirmed he had three friends here who otanged money but I doubt.

Third parties have exploited many grey areas and loopholes in Spore's casino regulatory framework. And it seems that for expediency a blind eye is turned to such practices.

Let's see... a 10k fine when he brought in 836k... that works out to be 1.2% of his total money.

I've always wondered what's the whole purpose of declaring how much you move in or out of our country. Is it to track possible money laundering act or to track and prevent money from going out of our country?
