Height of desperation sends cop aspirant to jail
Compiled by ANN TAN, P. ARUNA and A. RAMAN
A YOUTH from Salem, about 200km south of Chennai, South India, stuffed rolls of coconut fibre on his head and covered it with a wig to increase his height to be selected for the Tamil Nadu police force, reported Makkal Osai. But he was found out – and landed in prison instead for cheating.
Anand Kuppuraj, 25, son of a farmer from Vahalpatti village had arrived at the Armed Reserve Police Grounds in Salem with the necessary certificates for the selection. He was disqualified twice in the last two years as his height was only 165cm, which is less than the 170cm stipulated.
His ploy was detected when his wig came off when getting off the measuring scale. The puzzled selectors touched his head causing the wig to fall. Investigating officer, P. Kennedy said this was the first time an aspirant had done such a thing.
