<!-- story content : start --> COMBAT divers from the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) emerged from the water by the northern coastline of Singapore, and clambered up the four-storey structure next to the pier. The scenario of the exercise? A 'hostage' had been taken and was kept under watch by a group of 'terrorists'. Within seconds, cracks of rifles were heard, and soon the men from the Naval Diving Unit (NDU) came out of the structure. Mission accomplished.
The exercise will be on display this weekend at Changi Naval Base when the RSN throws open its doors to the public. The two-day Navy Open House will also showcase its latest vessels and give visitors a rare glimpse of its capabilities at sea and on land. Since the NDU was set up in 1971, its frogmen have been trained in salvage operations, underwater demolition and mine disposal. But as the RSN faces escalating piracy and terrorist threats, the divers are trained to take on more tasks, said Colonel Tan Tai Tiong, commander of NDU.
