$100 casino levy makes people stay longer, says analyst
By Benson Ang
June 14, 2010

Before the integrated resorts opened in Singapore, he used to gamble two hours each time at overseas casinos.

But the punter, who wanted to be known only as Mr Wang, has been gambling for more than 20 hours each time he visits the casino at Resorts World Sentosa (RWS).

Why? Because the 29-year-old sales executive wants to put the $100 casino levy to maximum use.

Punters like Mr Wang were the ones Royal Bank of Scotland analyst Philip Tulk was referring to when he spoke about how the levy is having a "positive effect because people are staying longer".

In response to The New Paper's queries, Mr Tulk, executive director of equities research, said: "The $100 price point seems low enough to allow many local players to justify entry but also high enough to say, 'If I'm paying $100, I'm going to stay awhile and get my money's worth'.

"It's just basic human psychology."

By playing longer, Mr Tulk added, punters are actually increasing their odds of losing money.
