BALING: Heavy rain and thunderstorm badly damaged about 30 houses in Taman Mas, Taman Desa Cempa and Kampung Carok Bemban here on Saturday.

During the 5pm incident, most of the tenants were at home when their houses' roofs were blown off, but there were no casualties or injuries reported.

One of the victim from Kampung Carok Bemban, Saodah Abd Ghani, 53, said her family was not aware that their roof had been blown away, because if was raining heavily.

"Only when the floor became wet due to water seeping in, did we send somebody to check upstairs. One of my children then shouted that our roof had been blown off," she said.

Saodah's son Mohd Wahizan Wahab, 28, said although the thunderstorm lasted only about 10 minutes, the impact was very strong.

Rohani Osman, 32, a victim from Taman Mas who was not at home during the thunderstorm, said she and her family were in Baling when informed by a neighbour and rushed home to find their house damaged.

The Baling Welfare Department conducted an inspection to determine the damage, before providing assistance.

Two weeks ago, a storm in Kuala Ketil, also near Baling, had damaged some 300 homes. - BERNAMA
